Church History Final Assignment Mrs. Sullivan

The first semester of Church History has focused on the formation of the early church. There was an incredible amount of struggle that went into creating the Church as we know it today. There have been so many people in the church that have gone before us that have paved the way. Your final assignment is to create an oral presentation and written report on a scholar/servant/disciple/saint of the church.

Directions for oral final: To be given the last week of semester
This will be presented through the program prezi.com which we will be learning next week in the library
1. Select your topic: A servant/disciple/saint of the church
2. Present a two minute presentation of the servant/disciple’s biography.
3. Present a two minute presentation explaining how this person’s life and their actions are related to being a servant/disciple of the church.
4. Present a minute reaction to how your servant/disciple has inspired you to become more like a servant/disciple of the church.

Directions for Written Final: DUE Dec. 10th
1. Compile the information you have gathered about the person in a 3 page report. Include the information you are using in your presentation.
Create a Bibliography for the sources you use.
• You MUST use book sources first (at least 2) before using the internet!!!

Your presentation/paper will be graded on the following criteria:
1) Speaking clearly with few “likes” and “you knows”. Ability to speak without total dependence on notes. Accurate time is also important.
2) Showing interest and enthusiasm for the topic.
3) Content: well organized and accurate information, showing specific examples of being a servant/disciple of the church.
4) Completeness and correctness of bibliography.
5) Your ability to follow the given outline.

We will have time in the library/computer lab to complete this project! Use that time wisely!

Debate Details

NEXT THURSDAY we will have a formal debate on the question:

Should priests in todays Church be allowed to be married?
 
You will be split into fighting FOR or AGAINST the question. You will individually be responsible for finding research on the topic and compiling FIVE separate/individual arguments for your side. You will write a single complete statement for each argument(thesis) then compose a paragraph with research supporting your argument. (cite everything!)

2nd quarter Prayer

Prayer for Peace – 2nd Quarter prayer – sign up by December Finals

This quarter’s prayer assignment is to find an article about a current situation in the world that needs prayer. This could be a variety of things from wars, to poverty, to attacks, etc. Print out the article that you find and then write a prayer for the situation. You will turn in both the article and your prayer. In addition you will create a small info sheet about what needs prayer in that part of the world. These will be put up on the prayer for peace map. These should be typed and eye catching.

Create a letter from a Roman woman, dating somewhere between 50 and 100 CE. This letter will describe her life (written in the first person) as well as the reasons she has been attracted to the Christian religion. The information is based on assigned readings.

Guidelines
• Your Roman woman may represent the social status of your choice (slave, plebian, patrician), but information in the letter must present specific information about that status
• Give your Roman woman a Roman name
• The information in your letter must reflect the reading materials listed on this handout.
• The letter is two pages long, double spaced and word-processed in a visually straightforward font, size 12
• A properly formatted bibliography follows the letter on a third page

This course begins as an introduction into the early church from Acts of the Apostles. We will explore the beginning of the church as a sect of Judaism to the present day church. We will study the events and people that have played a key role in the church development. In addition we will continue to enhance the faith formation of each student. Included in this course is the sophomore retreat led by Sr. Joann.

The Catholic Church, Journey, Wisdom and Mission – The book is a class set and will only be used in class.

3. All school rules apply, there is to be no food or drink except water allowed in the classroom.
4. Bathroom visits will be restricted. Be mindful of using the restroom before class and asking too frequently to leave the room.

I will be randomly calling on people to participate, be warned! I want to hear from you. You need to stay on task.

*Participation points*
At the start of each quarter every students receives 25 points for participation. You will lose 5 points for the following: Chewing gum, lacking class materials and requesting to go to your locker, having non-religion class materials on your desk, being disrespectful to myself or others.
Assignments
All typed assignments are to be in 12pt times new roman font with standard margins double spaced. (prayer is excluded in this) I only accept late work one day after the due date. An excused absence will grant you the number of days missed to turn in your assignment. The only information in the heading needed is your name, date, period and the assignment, which is to NOT be double spaced; Points will be deducted if this is not followed.
Prayer:
Prayer in this classroom is to begin with the cantor: Let us Remember… and response: That we are in the Holy presence of God. Each prayer is to conclude with the leader saying: Saint Joseph and the response from the class is Pray for us. Then all will say: God is my light
Each student is to lead the class in prayer twice in the semester, or four times through the year, ALL prayers must be turned in the day of your given prayer, the prayer must be typed, but freedom is given to font and organization.
• 1st quarter – Your prayer assignment is to lead the class in a prayer of a saint or traditional Catholic prayer that you discover. You cannot use: The Our Father, Hail Mary, Serenity Prayer, St. Francis or Footprints. There are numerous website that can help you discover such prayers and book in the library as well.
• The remaining prayer assignments will be given to you as the next quarter comes closer.
Last Notes:
I return your work in a bin in the back of the classroom. You may pick up your graded work there.
You will need to keep track of your past assignments and notes that you take. These will help aid you in studying for quizzes and tests.
I suggest you have a notebook just for this class for notes and other writings. Secondly, please ALWAYS have on hand: a pen, paper, note cards. Please provide these yourself and do not rely on the generosity of others.

Final project

Period One Proposals
1. In the Roman Catholic Church, women should be granted the sacrament of Holy Orders.
2. Contraception should be accepted by the Catholic Church.
3. Homosexuals of the Catholic faith should be granted equal rights and should be allowed to partake in all religious sacraments in the Catholic Church.
4. Women of the church should have equal rights as men, and therefore should be allowed to profess their faith by obtaining the sacrament of Holy Orders.
5. Contrary to the Catholic Church doctrine, here should be one set of rules in all dioceses for wedding ceremonies, rather than each church with its own rules.
6. The Catholic Church should regulate the punishment of priests who are guilty of molestation.
7. We propose for the Catholic Church to change to routine of the mass to a more contemporary feel.

4. The Church should allow contraception because it has more benefits than consequences.
5. The Catholic Church should defrock the clergymen once aware of them committing pedophilia.
6. Some holy sacraments should conform to today’s modern ideas and beliefs.
